Faqs

A standard, World Athletics approved athletic track measures 400m in an oval form with 8 lanes (certified). Other dimensions include 400m x 6 lanes, 200m x 8 lanes and 200m x 6 lanes. For non-standardised use, the number of lanes can be altered as per availability of space and the requirement of the athlete. The track usually has a 100m straight sprint with a 110m straight hurdle sprint. There are 2 Ds which can be used for javelin, hammer, discuss, shot-put and others.

No, the track length can be customised as per requirement and site situation. 200m tracks are also common and certified for indoor use. 100m tracks are straight in layout.

Professional tracks are PU (polyurethane) based and can be of three main types. Spray coat system, Sandwich system and full PUR system.
Apart from this, tracks for recreational use can also be made using artificial turf and these are great options for schools, colleges and playgrounds where the budget needs to be friendlier and the usage is for multi-sport and not just track and field events.

As per World Athletics’, the width of each lane should be 1.22m. .

Considering the Indian weather conditions, especially the humidity as well as the heat, one could consider the Sandwich system as the most durable system owing to not just its construction, but also its comfort for the athlete. It is budget friendly, a mid-level system and World Athletics approved.

For a standardised 400m track, the inner curvature must be minimum 36.1 m (straight line must be 86.6 m) when it comes to international competitions. For non-professional tracks, the curvature can be lower, but it depends upon the number of lanes and the area available. What one must keep in mind is that the athlete need not slow down in the turns owing to fear of crossing on to the adjacent track.

If the track is used only for running event, then an artificial turf ground in the centre is the most preferred solution owing to it being more maintenance friendly and the fact that you will not have muddy shoes. However, if you will have events like javelin throw, hammer throw or discuss throw, it is not suggested to have artificial turf in the middle as these could damage the turf.
